Michael K. Handlery is Inducted into the CH&LA Hall of Fame |
The California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) inducted Michael K. Handlery, CHA into the CH&LA Hall of Fame last Thursday, in San Francisco at the Hotel Nikko San Francisco. The Hall of Fame award is CH&LA's most prestigious honor, presented to California hoteliers or industry executives recognized for outstanding contributions of leadership, service, and professionalism to the California lodging industry and community at large.
Michael K. Handlery, CHA was the 18th recipient of the CH&LA Hall of Fame award. As Senior Vice President of Handlery Hotels, Inc, Handlery was honored for his tireless support of the lodging industry. Handlery is a third generation hotelier, who started working for the family business during his summer vacations when he was 12. In 1990, he was elected president of the California Hotel & Motel Association, a position his father also held in 1963. As Chairperson of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) in 2003, Handlery initiated a complete re-structuring process, resulting in the first dual membership organization in the U.S. lodging industry.
The proceeds from this year's Hall of Fame event benefited the CH&LA Educational Foundation. Generous sponsorships from Sara Lee Coffee & Tea, Superior Coffee, Gilchrist & Soames, the Hotel Council of San Francisco, and USA Today, and a very successful silent auction of items donated by Disneyland Hotel & Resort, The Four Seasons San Francisco, The Groveland Hotel, and La Quinta Resort & Club, all benefited the CH&LA Educational Foundation.
"We are extremely proud of Michael and pleased to honor him by including him in CH&LA's Hall of Fame," said James O. Abrams, President & CEO of CH&LA. "Michael's generosity with his time in support of the lodging industry truly sets him apart from others in the industry."
The California Hotel & Lodging Association (CH&LA) is the largest state lodging industry trade association in the country. Its 1,600 members, which comprise close to 180,000 guest rooms, consist of hotels, motels, bed and breakfast inns, guest ranches, resorts, spas, condominium rentals, timeshares, and vacation home rentals located throughout California, as well as supplier and vendor members. CH&LA's mission is to be the indispensable resource for communicating and protecting the rights and interests of the California lodging industry, for providing educational training and value programs for all segments of the industry, and for supporting strategic alliances to promote the value of California tourism and travel. Sacramento-based CH&LA has been representing California's lodging industry for more than a century. CH&LA is on the web at www.calodging.com.
